To sensitise people about the impact of environment and climate change on the endangered species within the country, Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Friday released the 2011 Calendar brought out by the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP) on the theme “India's Endangered Species”. Each month in the calendar focuses on an endangered species.

According to Ms. Soni, the calendar is being sent to all panchayats, eco-clubs in schools funded by the Environment and Forests Ministry and schools under “Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan” and “Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan” funded by the Human Resource Development Ministry across the country to sensitise people on the subject. As many as 12 lakh calendars would be printed for distribution.

The endangered species include the tiger, Asiatic lion, vultures, Indian elephant, Indian one-horned rhino, swamp deer, black-necked crane, western tragopan, snow leopard, olive ridley turtle, golden langoor and the red panda.

DAVP Director-General Frank Noronha outlined initiatives taken by DAVP to streamline the empanelment procedure for newspapers and magazines including implementation of the recommendations of the rate structure committee.
