Moot court discusses climate change, conflicts over trade

Ahmedabad: Climate change and conflict between nations over trade practices were the main points of discussion at the opening ceremony of the International Moot Court Competition,2010,which began here on Wednesday.

The moot court competition is hosted by Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) and will be conducted over the next four days.

Present at the opening ceremony of the competition were Rajeev Gupta,secretary,animal husbandry, fisheries and climate change department, Gujarat; P Gopichandran, principle research scientist, Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute; Bimal N Patel and Ramesh Kumar, director and registrar of GNLU respectively.

Most of the guests spoke about contentious trade matters in context of the climate change regime.“There are over 500 legal protocols that concern the international law concerning SEZ, trade and climate. There are various resolutions and pronouncements that are made bringing about changes in the existing laws. These laws have also fragmented the nations to a great extent,” said Gupta.

Gopichandran said, “There is no point now trying to find who the culprit is. It is time to apply precautionary measures, taking capacity building measures and following the principals of humility, truth and consciousness.”

Thirty-eight teams, including six teams from abroad,have arrived to take part in the competition. The competition will begin on Thursday with the finals scheduled on Sunday.
