Don’t waste, ‘food print’

It is heart rending to think that one in every seven people in the world go to bed, hungry. Everyday 20,000 children die from hunger. It is only appropriate that “Think. Eat. Save” is the theme for this year’s World Environment Day. With this, people all over the world will work together with the UN to reduce our negative impact on the world’s environment.

“Think. Eat. Save” reminds us to approach food reverently. It helps us reduce our ‘food print’ keeping in mind that every year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted.

This year, each one of us is challenged to make informed choices about food, its use, storage and sharing. During this time, let us also think of ways to tackle the problems that could end the world: climate change, global warming, disaster, conflicts and eco system mismanagement. Let us focus on planting, protecting and sustaining trees and plants.

Brazil, with 200 million people, was able to achieve the largest reduction of green house gases by firmly and aggressively reducing deforestation. Their poverty eradication program involves recycling and renewable energy and the generation of green jobs.

So what can you do every week to save money and planet Earth?

• Turn the lights off when you’re not in the room.

• Start using a reusable cloth bag for your groceries.

• Plug your TVs, DVD players, game systems and computers in surge protector power strips and then shut them off when not in use.

• Replace outdoor and landscape lights with solar lighting.
