Save power, save earth

It is a simple step that can go a long way as your contribution to fighting climate change.

All you have to do is just switch off your lights and electronic equipment from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on March 27 to participate.

Buoyed by the success of its 2009 campaign, the World Wide Fund for Nature, India (WWF-India) on Wednesday announced holding a similar Earth Hour this year on March 27.

Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru are official Earth Hour cities, among 15 Indian cities, during the 2010 campaign.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, “Even though this (the Earth Hour) is symbolic, it is an extremely important symbol of conservation of power.”

Delhi government plans to run a campaign along with WWF-India asking individuals, commercial establishments, barring essential services, to switch off all energy consuming devices. “Last year we saved 700 MW of power, this year we are aiming for more.”

“And not just contributing to action against climate change, a family can have a romantic candle light dinner when they switch off the lights,” Dikshit quipped.

Actor Abhishek Bachchan, the brand ambassador for the campaign, called it as a “wonderful but unfortunately necessary movement”.

Bachchan specially thanked Dikshit for her suggestion of a candle light dinner and said, “My wife would be most happy. I suggest all husbands do it and all the guys can also enjoy a candle light dinner with their girlfriends,” he said amidst peals of laughter.

On a serious note, the young star said, “It is actually simple if you know what to do. For instance, switch off the television from the mains and not just with the remote. Don't allow the tap or shower to run when you are shaving or bathing. Likewise, pull of the plug of the mobile charger and not just disconnect the mobile from the charger.”
