Guwahati, Nov 02: North East India and Guwahati’s business hub Fancy bazaar leads the list of maximum polluted area, both in sound and air during the Diwali celebration period this year.

This revelation came into fore during the pollution assessment operation carried out by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) in the Guwahati city on Diwali night.

Disclosing this to northeasttribune.com, PCB chairman, Jawaharlal Dutta further added that paltan bazaar area comes close second to fancy bazaar. “Though we have been able to procure a very useful result from our assessment on Tuesday evening but final result can be disclosed on Thursday only”, he added.

The PCB as always had fixed specific guidelines for the bursting of crackers but this Diwali the officials themselves got out in the field to determine the level of noise and air pollution in the seven regional offices of the state including Guwahati.

In Guwahati, the chairman, Dutta, himself led the team of officials with all necessary detecting tools and equipments to assess the scenario.

“We in cooperation with the District administration are patrolling from 6 pm to 10 pm to detect all the major places that are more vulnerable to pollution during the two days of Diwali”, Dutta informed.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, a city based organization ‘Friends Club’, celebrated Diwali in the midst of Fancy Bazar area with people from all walks of life participating in the celebrations.

The celebrations, which took off at around 9:30 last night, witnessed crackers from Assam’s Barpeta district and Tamil Nadu’s Sivakasi lighting the night sky. All the roads to the area were closed for four wheelers in view of the celebrations.
