Government plans ordinance on Land Reforms Act

The New Indian Express , Wednesday, May 01, 2013
Correspondent :
The government has decided to promulgate an ordinance to amend the Land Reforms Act, to facilitate distribution of title deeds for up to four acres of land holdings in the possession of a family.

The cut-off date for granting the title-deeds would be January 1, 1977, as approved by the Supreme Court.

In a post-Cabinet briefing, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy clarified that holdings over and above four acres in a family will be automatically vested as revenue land, and will be brought under the control of the government. The amendment is being brought superseding an earlier one promulgated during the tenure of the UDF Government in 2002, which had entailed sanctioning of title-deeds for one acre of land, on a fresh application. The decision of the government is to address a long-pending issue in the settler belts of the state. Incidentally, the move is ahead of the fast nearing Parliamentary polls.

Nod for Metro MoU

The Cabinet gave its approval for the MoU signed between the Kochi Metro Rail Corporation and the DMRC. ‘’Work on the Kochi metro will begin within a month,’’ the Chief Minister said.

Panel to be formed

A 17-member steering committee will be formed for ensuring the conservation of wetlands in the state.

The state has nominated the directors of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and the Centre for Water Resources Development and Management, Kozhikode, as nominees of the state in the Central Water Conservation Authority.

Tribal watchers

Seven Hundred tribal watchers will be appointed through the PSC on a permanent basis, including those who have lost their jobs after the AHADS project in Attapady was wound up.
