The cameras installed at the Kaziranga National Park (KNP) for estimating the tiger population assisted the park authorities in their anti-poaching operation on Monday. Two armed poachers were caught on camera near the Sonok camp under the KNP's Burapahar range.
Though the poachers stole one camera, park authorities found a picture of the men after reviewing the images in another.
Burapahar Range Officer Ikramul Mazid told The Hindu that forest guards manning the camp heard two gunshots around 2.28 a.m.
Mr. Mazid said: “We rushed in the direction of the gunshots and found one of the cameras missing. We suspect the poachers stole it. We informed the Divisional Forest Officer, who alerted our Research Officer and later while analysing the pictures in the other camera we found an image clearly showing two poachers carrying weapons. A sniffer dog led us towards Kukurakata Hills. Efforts are on to trace the poachers.”
