Spare forest staff from poll duties: NGO

The New Indian Express , Tuesday, April 16, 2013
Correspondent :
Wildlife First, an NGO, has sought permission from the Chief Electoral Officer to exempt the staff and vehicles of national parks, sanctuaries and tiger reserves from being requisitioned for election duties.

In a letter addressed to the CEO, members of Wildlife First stated that the Forest Department needs to continuously patrol and maintain anti-poaching camps in inaccessible forest areas. Withdrawal of staff or patrol vehicles would weaken the already stretched infrastructure. Hence, the members have requested the CEO to exempt forest staff and vehicles from election duties, the letter said.

As per an order issued by the Election Commission in 1998, staff and vehicles of wildlife sanctuaries and national game parks are to be exempted from election duties.
