EYEING the high potential in carbon trading in the country, DSCL Energy Services Company Ltd (DSCL ES) and the UK-based Agrinergy Ltd have joined hands to offer end-to-end clean development mechanism (CDM) solutions to Indian companies.

The marketing tie-up would offer services that include project development, development of CDM methodologies, project approval and registration and marketing of carbon credits or certified emission reductions (CERs).

CERs are generated by climate-friendly, sustainable development projects (also called clean development mechanism or CDM projects) in developing countries.

CERs can be used by governments and companies in developed countries to meet their reduction commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. They can be traded and amount to one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent.

Agrinergy is a dedicated CDM company that provides such core services as identifying, registering and transacting climate change projects. The Agrinergy Director, Mr Robert Taylor, told Business Line, "The tie-up would offer services in certain sectors including sugar, cement, small-scale renewable projects, municipal solid waste and steel." Moreover, other potential areas include oil and gas and fertiliser, he added.

"In the tie-up, Agrinergy brings its expertise in the CDM market, whereas DSCL ES brings in scale, technical experience and strong local presence," said Mr Taylor. The revenues from the services would be split equally between the two companies.

The Chief Executive of DSCL ES, Dr G.C. Datta Roy, added, "DSCL ES views this sector as a major growth area."

Agrinergy has developed a range of CDM projects, including those of blended cement and waste heat recovery through small-scale renewable energy. It has developed CDM methodologies for several Indian sugar companies, including Shree Renuka Sugars, which was the first bagasse-based sugar sector project to be registered by the UN panel.

DSCL ES provides consulting, engineering and performance contracting services for energy efficiency and renewable energy development projects in the industrial and commercial sectors in India and abroad.
