Each individual is a stakeholder in global commons, and in each individual is vested the responsibility of protecting these ecological resources . A slew of awareness rallies and environment conservation campaigns were organised here to underline this theme of shared stakes and responsibilities , on the occasion of the World Environment Day here on Tuesday.

An environment protection rally and ‘no plastic' campaign was organised here under the aegis of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and district administration.

The day saw awareness campaigns and rallies from Kodiampalayam to Kodiakarai participated by National Green Corps, National Social Service, National Cadet Corps, Junior Red Cross, and Guides and Scouts under the aegis of the TNPCB, department of school education, and district administration.

The campaigns included awareness on biodegradable and non-degradable wastes, their segregation at source, imprudence of continued use of plastics, and its threat to environmental sustenance.

Flagging off the rally here, Collector T.Munusamy underlined the significance of spreading the message of environmental conservation among tourists . The coastal district is home to some significant pilgrim centres including Velankanni and Nagore and places of historic value that include erstwhile Danish settlement of Tranquebar and Poompuhar.

Tourist places were the most ravaged with indiscriminate use and dumping of plastic bags and cups, without concern to the threat to environment, Mr.Munusamy said.

The disposal of plastics and their eventual burial destroyed soil quality and equally threatened marine ecology; burning of plastics contributed to emission of green houses gases abetting global warming and climate change. Awareness on this vicious cycle of degradation caused by use of plastics should be taken up seriously, the Collector said. Plastic-free environment also ensured an enabling environment free of disease.

Sapling plantations should be taken up by every individual.

The rally that commenced at C.S.I.Girls Higher Secondary School concluded at the Nagapattinam new bus stand engaged over 1000 students with placards and sloganeering. Students from National Higher Secondary School, Nagapattinam Municipal Higher Secondary School, C.S.I. Girls Higher Secondary School, Natarajan Damayanthi Higher Secondary School, and St,Anthony's Higher Secondary School.

V.Manikandan, Revenue Divisional Officer; V.Naleena, District Officer, TNPCB, participated
