JORHAT: The world famous Kaziranga National Park has lost a rhino calf and an elephant at its Bagori forest range on Wednesday. Park authorities said the causes of the death of both animals are yet to be ascertained and the carcasses have sent for autopsy.

Park director Surajit Dutta said an elephant died at Roti Khowa camp under Bagori forest range of the park early on Wednesday. The jumbo, which was used by the park authorities in anti-poaching and rescue operations, was kept at the camp for the last few months.

"The cause of death of the animal is yet to be ascertained. However, preliminary investigations by veterinarians suggest that the animal was bitten by a snake. However, only a postmortem report will ascertain the cause of death," added Dutta.

In the meantime, forest staff found the carcass of a rhino calf at Bahubeel forest camp under Bagori forest range.

"The animal was about a month old," said Bagori range officer Deven Nath.

He said the cause of death of the calf has not been ascertained so far. "We have conducted an autopsy on the carcass and the cause of the death could be confirmed only after reports are received," he said.
