NEW DELHI: Indira Gandhi National Open University's School of Extension and Development Studies and Chair for Sustainable Development has launched an online leadership programme on Himalayan eco-systems for scientists and policy makers working in the areas of agriculture, rural development, environmental science and sustainable development.

Member of Parliament Dr. Karan Singh who launched the programme earlier this week said that deforestation, population pressure and global warming are causing depletion of the ozone layer. “Unless there is involvement from Nepal, Bhutan, China, State Governments and Panchayati Raj institutions no concrete steps can be taken towards the conservation of the Himalayas. Environmental values must be integrated in school syllabus to sensitise the youth right from the start.”

He also cited the spiritual, ecological and environmental aspects of the Himalayas.

Admission to this course will be available to students throughout the year in four academic cycles during February, May, August and November. Once registered, learners will have access to personalised learning space which includes self instructional material, audio and videos, slides and self-assessment exercises. The programme ranges from a minimum of one month to a maximum of six months duration.

The objective of the programme is to sensitise and strengthen awareness regarding the Himalayan ecosystems in the context of sustainable development, to link and evolve the linkages of livelihood and ecological security in the mountain region and to improve awareness among the stakeholders about the impact of climate change and management.

The course content consists of an introduction to the mountain ecosystem, Himalayan livelihood systems and also addresses challenges to sustainable development.
