VIJAYAWADA: In view of the Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations that are set to commence on Saturday, the Jana Vignana Vedika (JVV) has urged people to opt only for the mini idols of Ganesha made of clay.

“Such idols made of eco friendly stuff can be immersed in any water body easily, said JVV state secretary Jampa Krishna Kishore in a statement on Wednesday.

‘Serve the poor'

Mr. Krishna Kishore asked the devotees to compete in rendering service to the poor and not in establishing huge idols.

“When the harmful materials that are used in the making of the idols mix with water in the canals, ponds and rivers, it results in water pollution,” he said.

On the contrary, idols made by using clay, grass or wood could mix easily with water at the time of immersion and do not cause any hurdles to free flow of water in rivers, canals and streams.

He also said that much money was being wasted on the installation of huge Ganesha idols and during immersion processions. High decibel music and fire works during processions were contributing to noise pollution and air pollution.

Mr. Krishna Kishore reminded the devotees of a judgment by the High Court, which detailed the steps for controlling all kinds of pollution.
