NEW DELHI: Economic growth has to be shared between nations and people and the relationship between climate change and economic growth is an inconvenient truth that the world faces, said Down to Earth magazine publisher Sunita Narain at Lady Shri Ram College here earlier this week.

Dr. Narain, who was the chief guest at the college's 53rd Annual Day celebrations, spoke of her experience in dealing with environm-ental issues and laid emphasis on the importance of present-day environmental concerns.

Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia, who was conferred the distinguished alumna award at the function, recalled her college days and spoke of the privilege of being a part of the institution. Labelling the college “world class”, she said she owed a great deal to the institution and appreciated the strong bond the faculty shared with the students.

Admiring Dr. Narain's “rigour of research” and labelling Prof. Walia as a “repository of independent knowledge”, LSR College Principal Meenakshi Gopinath elaborated on the annual achievements of various departments, societies, NSS and NCC of the college. She also congratulated LSR faculty who had received the Delhi University Distinguished Teacher Awards.

“The attempt at LSR is always to be mindful that our education engenders the scientific temper and that our research fosters a genuine and creative citizenship,” Dr. Gopinath said.

LSR Governing Body chairperson Arun Bharat Ram spoke about environmental concerns plaguing the world and pointed to lack of consciousness in society and called upon the common person's sense of responsibility, laying emphasis on the psyche of the young.

Students were awarded prizes for distinction achieved in college in the previous academic session and for academic excellence.
