Haryana has taken a leap forward by setting up a 1 MW power plant utilising biogas generated from distillery waste. Power Minister Mahender Partap Singh said that a 1 MW power plant has been commissioned at Ashoka Distillers and Chemicals at Hathin in Palwal which would utilise the biogas generated from the distillery waste.

Haryana Renewable Energy Department and Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) persuaded the concerned organisation and forwarded its proposal to the Union Ministry of New Renewable Energy during 2007-08 under the scheme of ‘Recovery of Energy/Power generation from Industrial and Commercial Wastes and Effluents’.

The proposal was approved and sanctioned by the Ministry with a total capital subsidy of Rs 80 lakh. The total cost of the project was Rs 4.50 crore. The Minister said that the project had multifaceted advantages. It would not only fulfill the demand of energy for the concerned distillery, but also save environment from the toxic effluents generated in the form of spent waste from this industry.

The waste generation was continuously increasing with the rapid urbanisation and Industrial development. Such large volumes of waste had created environmental pollution in terms of air pollution, water pollution, besides emission of toxic substances. The current method of waste disposal, ie, landfill, required large tracts of land and was becoming economically and environmentally unacceptable.

He said, “The waste generated is treated in anaerobic digesters to reduce the COD and BOD levels and to generate biogas. The biogas after purification is fed to gas engines to generate power. Few industries, wherein steam requirement is there, use the biogas in the boiler to generate high pressure steam.”

Sumita Misra, director, Renewable Energy Department, Haryana, said that the Department forwarded a similar proposal of setting up of three MW power plant utilising biogas generated from distillery waste at distillery Globus Spirit, Samalkha, district Panipat.
