LA PAZ, Bolivia, May 10 (UPI) -- The United Nations welcomes any initiative that contributes to a comprehensive response to climate change, the U.N. secretary-general said in Bolivia.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon discussed global climate change challenges with Bolivian President Evo Morales, who was the host for an April conference on environmental issues.
Ban welcomed Bolivian efforts to tackle climate change, saying all initiatives that lead to a comprehensive global response to climate change were encouraged, the U.N.'s news center reports.
The secretary-general added that climate change was the "defining challenge of our era."
Morales hosted the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in April. More than 20,000 environmental activists and representatives from 125 countries attended the 2-day conference.
Morales was greeted with cheers when he blamed aggressive economic activity for wreaking havoc on the environment.
"Capitalism is the chief enemy of humanity, synonymous with inequality and destruction of the planet," he said during the conference.
