Saving the environment from a youth's point of view

I was one of the fortunate students chosen to participate in the "Asean+3 Youth Environment Forum" that was held from April 21 to April 25 at the Empire Hotel Country Club.

It was an amazing experience for me as I had the chance to meet other students from different countries. The Asean+3 are the countries that are joining this forum to make a difference to the environment.

The three additional countries are China, Japan and Korea. The previous forum before this was called "National Youth Environment Forum".

The core of this forum was to tackle the problems encountered on environmental issues and to come up with several solutions to sustain our industrial development. Basically, seeing our climate change so drastically due to human activities, we need to find out ways to change our climate for the better and for it to be more sustainable.

During this forum, it's nice to see fascinating ideas from different countries and what activities they have been doing in order to preserve our environment.

In between these forums, all of the participants including me were divided into several groups to discuss among ourselves in coming up with 10 activities that we would like to do in our respective countries involving the government such as climate change, expanding local environment youth advocates, promoting environmental protection and conservation.

We managed to come up with '10 Simple Ways' for the Asean citizens to respond to climate changes. Some of them were to plant 'Green Curtain' to our windows, amazing race environment, cleaning campaigns in forms of competitions and compound reduction projects.

Not only did we come up with solutions to preserve our environment and climate change, we also had to come up with 10 advocacy bylines in English and had to be translated into different languages. Some of them were "Think of Earth, Think of US", "Plastics Are So Last Year, Reusable Bags Are Here", "W.A.T.E.R = We Are The Earth Rescuers" and "Don't be a Green Intruder, Be A Green Lover". It was fun trying to be creative and joining ideas with everyone during the session. We've become close friends because of this forum.

I learned valuable lessons from this forum. Learning about other countries' cultures with the different languages and traditions have been truly fascinating.

I am also amazed at how my colleagues can be very dedicated and strong-willed towards the environment. Seeing this made me think that there are more to life and how important it is to be open-minded in looking at the environment in a different angle. I promised myself that after the forum, I would do all that I can to help the environment. I hope I will have the opportunity to introduce the ideas I've learned to not only to my school but to my neighbourhood as well.

I would not have had the opportunity to participate in such an esteemed forum if not for the guidance of my teachers and encouragement from my school, PDSM Mentiri Secondary School. I am looking forward for more environment activities like this in the upcoming future, as I believe a little difference can really make a big change to our Mother Earth.
