Pachauri defiant, says charges against climate panel unfounded.

For Rajendra Pachauri, the ordeal is never-ending. Repeatedly being dragged in the eye of the storm for the ‘faults’ in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, the veteran scientist on Monday dismissed fresh attacks as “totally unfounded and baseless” and maintained that the IPCC monitoring systems are still robust and solid.

Last week, scientists from around the world voiced their solidarity with IPCC, insisting that despite the errors — which they said were minor — the science in the IPCC report was sound and the conclusion of the report unchallenged. ‘‘While the media has been quick to castigate the IPCC report, most of the scientist fraternity from across the world has spoken in support of Dr Pachauri. That’s a clear indication that his work is still highly regarded,’’ said a source working closely with Pachauri.

The source said, ‘‘When Sunday Telegraph (the newspaper that broke the report of how IPCC had not substantiated its claim about glacier melt in the Himalayas) contacted the lead scientists behind the two papers in Nature they expressed surprise that their research work was not cited by IPCC, but said the report had accurately represented their work.’’

While IPCC had already issued an apology for inaccurate statements about global warming in January this year, in its most recent report it observed reductions in mountain ice in the Andes, Alps and Africa due to global warming. For this report, IPCC cited two papers as the source of the information — the first, a magazine article by Mark Bowen drawn from anecdotes, and another, a dissertation written by a professional mountain guide and climate change campaigner Dario-Andri Schworer, while he was studying at University of Berne in Switzerland.
