Oct. 26: In line with his decision to involve states in the Ganga Action Plan, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday constituted a forum of chief ministers of the Himalayan states to review impact of climate change in the region and monitor adaptation measures. The decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change, where Dr Singh is also learnt to have said that he would soon be calling a meeting of chief ministers of the Himalayan states to discuss strategies to make the region less vulnerable to climate change.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Prime Minister said, "It is extremely important that we lose no time in implementing the practical measures that have been identified. While the state governments have been sensitised to the need for such measures, I will invite the chief ministers of the Himalayan states to join in a national effort to safeguard the eco-system." Dr Singh also announced that the government will come up with a white paper on impact of the global warming.
