Oct. 14: In an effort to strengthen indigenous expertise and study on the climate change issue, India on Wednesday launched a network of scientists from the country’s premier institutes who would study effects of climate change and suggest ways to combat it. The network — Indian Network of Climate Change Assessment (INCCA) also aims to bring more private research institutes and non-governmental organisations to study the impact of climate change. Environment minister Jairam Ramesh said: "The idea is to prepare scientific reports at the domestic level about the impact of climate change on various sectors, which can give a real picture and influence the world debate."

Mr Ramesh said so far India was depending on the research and studies done by developed countries on what is happening in India, especially in the field of Himalayan glaciers.

"It should not happen, we should have our own expertise," said the minister who also asked his ministry to provide contemporary estimates, instead of outdated data."
