ANANTAPUR: It is the people living in the Deccan Plateau area who are likely to face the vagaries of climate change first in South Asia, former chairman of Karnataka Agriculture Board and former Vice Chancellor of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, Dwarakinath, has warned.

Speaking at Southern Region Consultation on Climate Change and Sustainable Agriculture here on Friday he said manifestations of climate change like regular drought conditions, untimely rains and floods, very long dry spells and the resultant crop failures would be very harsh on Deccan Plateau.

There were 34 drought-prone districts in the area, he stated.

The climate change resulting from global warming being caused by various aspects would also lead to intensification of pest and insect attacks on crops, increased pressure on lands and harsh changes in the micro climate. To slow down the dry winds it would be required to increase the vegetative cover, which in turn would help improve humidity by preventing evaporation of moisture.

Biological exchange

Tree crops would help in biological exchange between the cultivable area and non-sown area. Retaining more rainwater with some more efforts and mixed cropping would also help overcome the climate change. Former Agriculture minister Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao stated that agriculture production would fall with climate change. The productivity of rice was likely to go down in the range of 15 to 55 per cent and that of wheat from 30 to 55 pc by 2050 due to global warming, he noted. Director of Accion Fraterna Y.V. Malla Reddy and several others spoke at the workshop.
