Anti-poaching measures for Orang National Park

DALGAON, Sept 7 – The Government has formulated some anti-poaching measures for Orang National park in Darrang by forming a coordination committee with the deputy commissioners and superintendent of police of two surrounding districts, ie. Sonitpur and Morigaon along with Darrang district administration, including a few infrastructural developments in the interest of security of wildlife in the park.

The decision was taken at a high-level official meeting held on Thursday in the park with Suresh Chand, PCCF (Wildlife), Government of Assam in the chair and attended by DCs of Darrang and Sonitpur and other high-level police officials of the two districts, higher Forest officials and Army officials.

Talking to mediapersons at the park campus immediately after the closedoor meeting, PCCF Suresh Chand informed about the decision to create a post of Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF) in the park and appoint on deputation.

The meeting also decided to appoint 20 armed Home Guard personnel, 10 from Darrang and 10 from Sonitpur district to strengthen the Forest Protection Force of the park. The meeting also decided to upgrade security infrastructure like setting up of new anti-poaching forest camps, one floating camp and purchasing of five more motor boats to maintain close vigil on the riverine activities.

PCCF Suresh Chanda also stressed the need of amendment of Cr PC and Arms Act so that forest guards could be provided with sophisticated fire arms instead of the old 303 bore rifles.

In addition to DC, Darrang, Dhruba Hazarika, DC Sonitpur, Rajesh Prasad, superintendent of Sonitpur, Surendra Kumar, Addl SP Darrang, Haren Takbi, Major of 44 Assam Rifles, R Prabhakar, Daya Mangal Sing CCF(WL) and Bisen Sing Bonal, CCF (Monitoring and Valuation) were present in the meeting.
