In a bid to help commuters to save money and curtail vehicular pollution by reducing the number of cars, the city’s one of the oldest school — St John’s School, Sector-26 has taken a unique initiative of carpool and is setting an example for other schools, who are facing parking blues during the morning and afternoon rush hours.

The school, which has also initiated a move to create awareness against female foeticide and save the girl child through its curriculum, is now regularly encouraging their staff members and students to carpool.

“We have issued special carpool stickers to the staff members and parents of the students who brought their cars to drop or pick their relatives,” Kavita Das, principal of the school told The Pioneer.

She said: “To curtail the vehicular pollution, to avert the parking blues and to save petrol and money of the city denizens who are associated with our school in a way or other, we are promoting the carpooling system.”

As Le Corbusier envisaged City Beautiful is emerging as a big convention city, the city is facing challenges like pollution, traffic congestion, less parking space. The novel idea of carpooling by the school authorities seems to show some hope to save Corbusier’s Ville Verte (green city).

“The carpool system in the school was put into practice a long time ago and since then we are making an effort to involve maximum students and staff members of the school to adopt this idea,” said Das.

“We had started this system by issuing car-pool stickers to those cars that bring a group of children to the school to park inside and for others we try to fix up things so that not too many cars gather at the same time, this also helps to prevent traffic chaos outside the school,” added she.

With a cluster of schools and colleges around the St John’s School in Sector-26, the school authorities took the decision of carpooling to avert any kind of inconvenience on the roads during the rush hours.

At present, nearly three to four students who belong to same sector travels from one car and likewise nearly two to three teachers follow the carpool system. The school Principal said: “To further promote the carpooling system, we have planned to present a token of appreciation to the students and staff members who are following the carpool system from a long time.”

“We are following the carpool system from last one year and we share the money, that we save from this, on the car fuel,” said a teacher in the school.
