Call to protect environment

GUWAHATI, June 10 – “I, in the name of the Almighty, do take oath that I shall observe diverse environmental problems/crises, properly dispose of garbage of my household, judiciously use electricity and water and any natural resources.” With this oath-taking event in the Institution of Engineers (India), conservation group Aaranyak started the observance of World Environment Day with participation of 12 schools of Guwahati.

Professor Arup Kumar Mishra, who led the oath with the participants, appealed to people to work ethically and contribute towards environmental protection as concerned citizens of this planet. This was followed by a slide show presentation on climate change and biodiversity delivered by Purnima Devi Barman, an environmental educator and researcher with Aaranyak, where she highlighted the impact of climate change on biodiversity, forest degradation as a major cause of greenhouse effect.

Other important events included in the programmes were poster exhibition and debate competition for school children. The theme of the poster competition was the global theme, ‘The planet needs you – unite to combat climate change’. Upashya Roy Barua and Jiyori Lahkar (Sarla Birla Gyanjyoti School, Amin Gaon), Jesika Kashyap and Wahida Rahman (Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Silpukhuri), Shiddanta Borbarua and Sanjukta Choudhuri (Axel Public School, Survey), Tehjib Saikia and Ansuman Deka (Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti School, Amingaon) won first, second, third and consolation prizes respectively.

In the debate competition, Sukanya Sarma (Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Silpukhuri), Prayashi Phukan (Maharshi Vidya Mandir, Silpukhuri), Udishmit Thakuria (Don Bosco School, Pan Bazar) Amrita Majumdar (JBN Academy, Jalukbari) won first, second, third and consolation awards respectively. The theme of the competition was, “Development is impossible without environmental degradation” (for motion).
