Governor emphasises need to combat poaching

POBITORA (Assam): Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen (Retd) J J Singh emphasised the need of a concerted effort to combat poaching and preservation of flora and fauna of the North East region.

Anti-social activities such as destruction of forests and killing of wild animals, including the endangered Great Indian one-horned rhino, must be curbed in the region, Gen Singh said during his visit to Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Cental Assam's Morigaon district.

He also urged the state government to open an eco-tourism centre at Pobitora for promotion of of both the park and tourism here.

Near Guwahati and the other home after Kaziranga National Park in Upper Assam's Golaghat district to the one-horned rhino, Pobitora has the highest density of rhino population at over five animals per sq km totalling 92.
