SIVAGANGA: A few village panchayats and private organisations in the district have decided to observe “Earth Hour” on Saturday to create an awareness on saving energy and reduce the carbon footprint.

According to the plan, the people will switch off all lights, electrical appliances for an hour from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm on Saturday. This decision was taken based on information that Delhi and Mumbai have come forward to observe the day on the line of rest of the world.

Johny Peter, General Manager of the Visalam heritage bungalow at Kanadukathan, who has taken the initiative to involve all people for observing Earth Hour, told The Hindu that all households, small scale units, private offices and others of in and around Kanadukathan village had come forward to switch off light for an hour to express solidarity with the rest of the world in stressing the need for conserving energy to save nature.

All electrical equipments, including air conditions, lights, cooking vessels and others would be switched off. The tourists had also been impressed upon the need to join in the effort.

Only candles would be used for illumination during the one hour.

The one-hour “light off” was a move to take responsibility in spreading the awareness of climate change and global warming among the people, local community and others.

An awareness programme would also be organised to highlight the misuse of energy with particular emphasis on power, fuel, water and air.
