MUMBAI: If you want to save GenNext from the hazards of climate change, enlist the support of youngsters, starting today. That's scientist and Nobel Laureate R K Pachauri's latest mission as he looks to schools across the country seeking to turn students into green ambassadors.

The campaign, called Soldiers of the Earth-spearheaded by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Delhi, and supported by various organisations-will see environmentalists approaching schools with the aim of involving students in conserving natural resources.

"We believe that kids in schools need to be educated about the ways in which we are damaging the environment and its implications on the future,'' said Pachauri, director general of TERI.

TERI has published a number of child-friendly books that will be released on Friday by actor Akshay Kumar who has also conceptualised one of the books.

"We want to show children what small steps, such as conserving power by switching off the lights and fans, can do,'' said Pachauri who received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change).

The campaign will inculcate the importance of clean drinking water, promote recycling, and encourage kids to say no to plastic. These young `soldiers' will be agents of change in their schools and neighbourhoods, all the while being guided by mentors-TERI scientists and teachers.
