Meet stresses need to tackle environmental challenges

KANNUR: A two-day national conference on environmental challenges and sustainable development held at Sir Syed College, Taliparamba, here underlined the urgency of addressing environmental issues.

The conference, which concluded on the campus on Thursday, was organised by the Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Botany of the college with the aid of the University Grants Commission.

Kannur University Vice-Chancellor P.K. Michael Tharakan, who was the chief guest at the function, urged the scientific community to find solutions to mitigate climate change, which, he said, was the result of environmental problems facing the world.

In his inaugural speech, former Supreme Court judge V. Khalid said anthropogenic intervention was the main cause of environmental challenges.

He also laid stress on creating awareness of conservation of nature.

College Principal P.K. Abdulla and Divisional Forest Officer Roy P. Thomas were present.

As many as 26 papers from various universities and research centres in the country were presented. G.M. Nair of the University of Kerala; Rasheed Ahammed of Mysore University; Madhusoodanan of the University of Calicut; Saravana Babu of C.N. College, Erode; K.P Joy, course coordinator of Environmental Studies; and K.V. Pavithran of Kannur University; presented papers.

Students from Mangalore University, Mysore University, Bharathiar University, Kuvempu University, Kerala University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Pondicherry University and other institutions participated in the conference.

As part of the conference, the delegates visited the eco-fragile wetland sites of Chempallikkundu and Ettikkulam.
