‘Responsible tourism can combat climate-change challenge’

PATHSALA, Oct 10 – World Tourism Day was observed at Bajali College recently under the aegis of the department of Tourism and Travel Management (TTM) in collaboration with India Tourism, Guwahati and Assam Tourism, Barpeta Road with a programme of seminar exhibition, street-play, etc.

The day-long programme on the occasion began with the seminar on “global challenge of climate change and role of local communities in the development of responsible tourism.” Prof Arindam Talukdar, co-ordinator, department of TTM explained the propose and stated how responsible tourism may help combat challenge of climate change in the world. Dr Debendra Nath Sarma, principal of the college inaugurated the seminar. Dr Sarma explained the significance of the day with an appeal to the students to respond to the climate change.

Chandra Kanta Basumatary, president, Mauzendri, Eco-Tourism Society, BTC and Bijoy Choudhury, president, Manas Sousi Khongkhor Eco-Tourism Society, also honorary conservator of forests, Assam spoke as the resource persons. Both the resource persons stressed on the need of participation of local communities for conservation and preservation of natural resources and also sustainable tourism development to fight the climate change. Prof Jibankrishna Patra conducted the seminar.

An exhibition on tourism with display of various tourism resources through multi-media presentations, posters, brochures and project report etc was held followed by a street play Seuji Dharani Dhuniya performed by the students of the department.
