ERODE: Demanding the closure of a carbon manufacturing plant in their village for allegedly causing air pollution, around 200 people of Vadugapatty submitted a memorandum to District Collector Mahesan Kasirajan.

The villagers virtually barged into the District Development Council meeting hall where the farmers grievances day meet was being held.

They entered the hall shortly after President of the Lower Bhavani Project Ryots Association C Nallasamy complained that the entire Vadugapatty village near here had been affected by the factory, which burnt coconut shells.

The villagers said thick black smoke was emanating from the factory and those who inhaled the smoke had been afflicted with various diseases.

The Collector assured that he would take action over the memorandum within a week.

The villagers said they would resort to an agitation of the factory was not closed within next 10 days.

Responding to a representation by the Kalingarayan Farmers Association President V M Velayutham on the problem faced by them for irrigation water, PWD Principal Secretary and Zonal Commissioner for Erode Adhiseshaiah said the government had granted its consent for the modernisation of the Kalingarayan canal at a cost of Rs 11.61 crore to be sanctioned by the NABARD. Once the work was completed, there would be no water problem, he said.
