CHENNAI: Keeping up with global trends, the Tamil Nadu Government on Wednesday announced it will undertake a detailed study on the impact of climate changes in the state. According to the Policy Note of the Environment and Forests Department for the year 2008-09, the study would suggest remedial measures to combat the issue. "This study is proposed to be taken up through any one of the organisations, The Energy Research Institute, Anna University or Indian Institute of Technology, Madras- at a cost of Rs 10 lakh during the year 2008-09," the note read. The need for such a study came in the wake of threat to India's food security and water availability due to climate change, it added. Further, the tiger population, a much debated topic in the country, had risen by 25 per cent in Tamil Nadu, the note said without mentioning the number of the big cats in the state. On the elephant front, the state had identified two of the most important pathways used by the "migratory species" to clear them of any encroachments. "A committee headed by Nilgiris District Collector has been constituted for acquisition and establishment of Jackanar ,Kallar and Moyar tracts as corridors of elephant migration," the policy note said. Among the new announcements for the year 2008-09, Forests Minister N Selvaraj said that his Ministry would supply 1.67 lakh tree saplings to local bodies free of cost. He also announced Night Safari scheme for the popular Arignar Anna Zoological Park, located near Chennai.
