RAMANATHAPURAM: Officials of the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park on Monday arrested three persons for allegedly poaching Dugong Dugon (a sea cow), an endangered species, and seized the carcass.

The two-year-old animal was 1.5 metre long and weighed 80 kg.

A ‘Q’ branch police team, which visited Muthupettai, a coastal hamlet near here, at the early hours to monitor the movement of smugglers, spotted Jamal Mohamed (40), Syed (30) and Seeni Peer (30) of Periapattinam when they were loading the animal into an autorickshaw from a country boat at the seashore. Along with the carcass and the autorickshaw, they were handed over to the park authorities.
