‘Global warming, the biggest environmental threat today’

DIGBOI, June 10: World Environment Day was observed at the Assam Oil Division of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited with a day-long programme on June 5. The celebrations got off to a start with the pledge-taking ceremony at Digboi Refinery, all marketing locations and administrative offices of the AOD. Tree saplings were also planted at the different marketing locations.

As part of the celebrations, IOCL(AOD) executive director PL Barua, along with JN Mahanta, general manager (marketing) and SK Chatterjee, general manager (technical) released some fish fry and ducklings in the pond at the centenary park at Digboi. The three senior officials also planted saplings at the centenary park.

At the concluding function held later in the day at India Club, Digboi, PL Barua spoke on the need to protect the environment and take appropriate measures to counter the challenges faced by global warming and climate changes. He also spoke briefly on the initiatives taken by the Assam Oil Division of Indian Oil Corporation Limited to protect the environment.

Dr KK Baruah, head of the department of environmental sciences, Tezpur University, who was the chief guest on the occasion, gave a very interesting talk on global warming, climate change and its consequences. A brief presentation on Digboi Refinery’s environmental protection efforts was also presented on the occasion.

An issue of Surya, Digboi Refinery’s environmental newsletter was also released by Dr Baruah on the occasion. PL Barua gave away prizes to the winners of various competitions which had been organized over the past couple of weeks as a build up to the World Environment Day.

Digboi Science Society also observe World Environment Day with a day-long programme. A massive plantation of saplings was carried out at Sowmar Vidyapith School. The open session, organized on the occasion, was chaired by Prof G Kalita, president of Digboi Science Society. K Majumdar, secretary of the Society, explained the significance of the day.

Speaking as the appointed speaker, Provakar Das, DFM Digboi, said that global warming has been the greatest environmental threat today. He said that the threat has been mainly due to our wrongdoings which has led to a rise in temperature in the Polar region.

The meeting was addressed by Principal of the school Prof BC Kotoky. A prize-money quiz competition on science topics was organized jointly by IOCL and Digboi Science Society
