A panther was found dead near Motinala under the Mukki range of the Kanha National Park on Tuesday. All the four paws of the panther had been severed which suggested that the panther had been poached. This is the second such incident within the Kanha National Park reported in quick succession.

According to reports reaching here, a panther was found dead in the Motinala area of the Kanha National Park. Teams from the forest department reached the spot on learning about the incident. Senior officials including the Director and the Deputy Director of the National Park also reached the spot.

Sources said that all the four paws of the panther were found severed. Forest department officials said that it appears that the poachers after killing the animal cut off the paws. Claws, teeth and the skin of carnivores fetch a high price in the international market.

This is the second incident of poaching reported from the Kanha National Park within a month. A tiger with a trap clinging to its paw had been sighted by a foreign tourist in the Kanha National Park last month. A tigress had been found dead near Kisli in 2006. Forest department officials have sent the body of the panther for post mortem to ascertain the cause of death.
