Nagpur, November 11:An adult tigress (about 3 years old) was found dead in the Virur range of Central Chanda Division on Friday.

Four persons from the nearby Yergavan village were arrested in connection with the case but forest officials are ruling out poaching. Officials believe they the four held are not the main culprits.

Except for its whiskers and nails, the carcass was found intact in the Virur range of Rajura tehsil. “That is why we believe it is not a case of poaching. Probably, the culprits wanted to kill a wild pig and had laid a trap for it, but the tigress got trapped,” Divisional Forest Officer (territorial) Kalyan Kumar told The Indian Express. “There is no power supply close to the spot and the nearby water body is too big to be poisoned. So, it is not a case of poisoning or electrocution,” he added.

“We are looking for the real culprits,” Kumar said and added “the four villagers arrested, probably, pulled out the whiskers and nails because of some superstition.”

This tiger death in Viur becomes the twelfth in the Vidarbha region over the past two years. Earlier this week, two fresh leopard skins were seized from a scrap dealer in Dharni tehsil of Melghat forest in Amravati district.
