Bhubaneswar : The State Government has decided to take up community policing in the Chandaka Reserve Forest to stop the incidents of poaching and the stop the menace of timber smuggling.

Divisional Forest Officer Akshay Patnaik said that in the first phase some local youth of the villages near the forest would be appointed to help the local Bana Suraksha Samiti. Poaching of animals like elephants and wild boars has been also rampant. The Forest officials due to shortage of staff could not curb these illegal activities. Forest department officials hoped that community policing would act as a force multiplier for them and also help in curbing incidents of poaching and smuggling of timber.
