Dussehra rally too loud, complains activist in Mumbai
Correspondent : Bella Jaisinghani
MUMBAI: Anti-noise pollution activist SumairaAbdulali who measured noise levels at Uddhav Thackeray's Dassera rally in Shivaji Park on September 30 said the sounds levels recorded were inordinately high.

"Thackeray did tone town a little for a while but levels rose once more. The highest decibel level recorded during the rally was 96.2 dB," she said. Abdulali gave a minute by minute account of decibel levels through the entire evening. Most times the noise varied between 63-85 dB.

"Last year, the peak noise from instruments not from speeches and didn't last long. This year was consistently loud from speeches and only toned down briefly before it went up again," she said.

Last year the activist had measured 98.9 dB at the same rally. The venue is a silence zone.

Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe who also addressed the rally said, "Any excessive sound must have been inadvertent. There are technical aspects to a microphone which are beyond each speaker's control. We fully intend to follow the court's ruling in this matter. If any accidental violations occur it is up to the activists to decide the course of action."
