The air you breathe is poor, but better than last year: Data
Correspondent : Richa Pinto
MUMBAI: Air quality in Mumbai has shown steady deterioration over the years but the latest findings indicate a mixed picture-extent of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is down and so is percentage of nitrogen dioxide in ambient airin residential areas like Andheri. PM2.5 and NO2 are produced through construction activity and vehicular pollution.

However, annual averages for various pollutants in Mumbai's atmosphere are still way above the permissible limit. Air quality is monitored at two traffic junctions in the city, one at Wadala and another at Andheri, using mobile air quality monitoring vans.

According to data from the BMC's Environment Status Report 2016-17, the study of the last two years indicates that sulphur dioxide (SO2) levels in the air have gone up though they are within prescribed limits. As for NO2, it shows a drop at Andheri and an increase at Wadala, but levels measured are above prescribed limits in both cases.

In case of suspended particulate matter, PM 2.5 and PM10, levels are lower than last year but way above the prescribed limits. Many experts have stated that PM2.5 is a more serious health concern than PM10, since smaller particles can be ingested more easily and cause more damage.
