| Hyderabad: End to leachate pollution |

| Hyderabad: In a huge relief to the villages surrounding Jawaharnagardumpyard, the GHMC has now completed works on percolation tanks and the diversion canal which will bring down groundwater contamination. Water is already being diverted from the dumpyard.
The Rs1.83 crore project was started two months ago and involved a percolation tank on the upstream of the garbage filled hill. This tank will collect rainwater from the catchment area of the garbage hill and carry it downstream through a diversion canal. Officials say it will contain pure rain water.
This project will prevent the formation of leachate at the dump yard which has over 14 million tonnes of waste. Leachate is a hazardous liquid which seeps from solid waste.
“This diversion will bring in fresh water from the percolation tanks upstream and will not pollute the lakes underneath. There will be no need for sewage treatment here,” said Mr Y. Shekhar Reddy of GHMC’s irrigation department.
The water will be diverted to an adjacent lake, Gundlakammacheruvu. Earlier, villagers from Haridasapally and Cheriyala had staged a protest over contamination of groundwater.
