Correspondent : Vijay Pinjarkar
Nagpur: In yet another development in the Pench poaching racket, 12 tiger whiskers were seized from a fishermen on late Tuesday night while three more persons from Kolitmara in West Pench were arrested, taking the total number of arrested persons to 13.

The three accused, who were arrested on Wednesday, have been identified as ex-zillaparishad member RV Kodwate, panchayat samiti member MD Inwate and VJ Gedam.

This is the third big seizure of tiger body parts from the accused fishermen, who are not only involved in illegal fishing in Totladoh reservoir inside Pench but are also into tiger and herbivore poaching.

Earlier, 12kg of tiger bones, 14 tiger nails and four canines have been seized from different accused. Now, 12 whiskers have been seized from accused NeelkanthKudsam, a resident of Tirodi in Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh.

Kudsam has confessed that the whiskers were removed from Golpahadi tiger inside the core area of Pench. The tiger was poisoned to death by sprinkling insecticide in a waterhole during Holi this year.

Kudsam's name was revealed by accused BB Parteti and SD Dhurve of Kolitmara in West Pench. Parteti, from whom four tiger canines were recovered, had told investigating officials about Kudsam having whiskers.

Kudsam had come in touch with the fishermen as his in-laws lived in Kolitmara. He was in bid to trade these whiskers with parties in Maharashtra, sources said.

Based on the inputs provided by Kudsam, forest officials are on the move and are zeroing on the accused. Till now, 10 accused have been nabbed since June 27, when the racket was exposed by Paoni RFO PS Pakhale and others.

Initially, the whiskers were in the possession of the three accused who were arrested on Wednesday. After the forest department probe started nailing the accused, the trio handed over the nails to Kudsam from Tirodi.

Meanwhile, the forest custody remand (FCR) of three accused BB Parteti, SD Dhurve and Kudsam ends on Thursday. Forest officials have decided to seek extension of the FCR as there are more links to the case.
