Pollution by industries being monitored online
Correspondent : TNN
UDAIPUR: In a bid to curb the increasing level of pollution especially in the industrial areas, the Pollution Control Board has introduced recently web-enabled monitoring of pollution by factories. Currently, PCB has installed sensors at 20 industries which are being monitored online to find the amount of dangerous gases they are emitting per day.

As the pollution level cross the permissible limit, the sensors linked with the departmental software sends an automatic warning message to the factory management. After three warning messages, if the pollution level isn't brought under control, the managements would be send notices, authorities informed.

Authorities are concerned over the release of harmful gases like carbon monoxide and sulphur dioxide etc and other effluents from industries. The move by the State pollution authority follows a push from the Central Pollution Control Board in New Delhi towards self-regulation by factories. "Our concern is about the impact of 17 categories of industries, including fertilizers, petrochemicals, dye and dye intermediates, cement, pharmaceuticals and power plants. The cost and onus lies on the companies to install high-quality sensors in their chimneys, and software to convert accumulated data regarding air and water pollution and send them across to the state PCB and Central Pollution Control Board offices," Dr B R Panwar, regional officer of the PCB at Udaipur said. There are around 14 fertilizer manufacturing units in Udaipur where such sensors have been installed and another major unit is Hindustan Zinc, Panwar said.
