BHAWANIPATNA: AS many as 15 rare birds were seized from a bus by forest officials of Kalahandi south division on Monday near Sagada. On a tip-off, the officials intercepted a private bus coming from Thuamul Rampur to Bhawanipatna near Sagada and seized 15 quail birds that were being smuggled. Later, owner, driver and helper of the bus were arrested and the vehicle was seized.
Sources said Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary in Thuamul Rampur block is home to several varieties of wild animals and birds. Despite surveillance and check posts in the sanctuary, the forest has turned into a haven for poachers and bird smugglers. In the past, several elephant poachers were caught and sent to jail.
Similarly, Bhawanipatna - Kasipur State Highway passing through the forest area is a safe escape route for smugglers and poachers due to lack of supervision by forest officials.
