Aurangabad: Nature lovers can meet new feathered friends at Himayat Bagh on Thursday at a special trail to be organised on International Birds Day.
The bird watching trail will be organised by Environmental Research Foundation and Educational Academy (ERFEA) between 6.30 am and 9.30 am. The entry is free and participants can learn about different species from experts.
The participants can get first-hand information on bird diversity of Himayat Bagh and conservation of environment. "More than 120 species of birds have been recorded in and around Himayat Bagh in the past. Birds are an important part of the environment as they play a major role in food chain and conservation of biodiversity. This very message could be successfully demonstrated during the bird watching trail," ERFEA founder DilipYardi said.
The bright yellow Iora, dark blue Tickells Blue Flycatcher with an orange coloured throat, Small Minivet, Great Tit, Hornbill, Shikra and Spotted Owlets can most often be spotted at Himayat Bagh.
Established in 1894 by Charles Babcock in Pennsylvannia, International Birds Day is observed every year to promote bird conservation as a moral value. "While the occasion is time to celebrate birds and all that they stand for, we have arranged bird-watching trail at Himayat Bagh," Ameya Deshpande, wildlife photographer and ERFEA volunteer, said.
Observing that birds have been losing their habitats, migratory stopover sites and sources of nutrition, he said International Birds Day can be used as an opportunity to create public awareness.
"A little contribution by everyone can truly make a difference in the lives of our beaked buddies and advocacy to this effect would be done to mark the occasion," Deshpande added.
Located near the famous Salim Ali Lake, Himayat Bagh, which houses a state-run Fruit Research Center, has a rich fruits and flowers plantation which helps in attracting a lot of birds.
Further details about the event is available on ERFEA's Facebook page, it was said.
