The government panel has approved the allocation of Rs 1,900 crore for the 'Clean Ganga project'. Experts believe that this new influx of fund will expedite the project.
Clean Ganga project was launched by the government to minimise the rising water pollution level that is affecting the environment and millions of people who live around the river. After facing the wrath of the National Green Tribunal, Minister of Water Resources, Uma Bharti created a high-level committee that would monitor the work of the project.
The 'Namami Gange programme' was launched by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, coupled with a whopping budget of more than 20,000 crores for a five-year period ending 2020. However, an RTI query last year revealed that only 20% of the funds allocated for the first two years of the project has remained unutilised. National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) oversees the entire project.
