Great Backyard Bird Count to begin on February 17
Correspondent :
The fifth edition of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) will be organised from February 17 to 20.

This is a global event and those interested in participating in the programme could go birding for at least 15 minutes, list and count all the species that they see and upload the list in eBird (www.ebird.org) on any of the four days or on all days. As the name suggests, one can count birds even from their backyard or any other place of interest. Birders can update their lists as many times as possible.

The Campus Bird Count is a sub-event of GBBC in which all types of institutions can participate. So far seven educational institutions in Salem have registered. On February 18 and 19, bird walks will be conducted for the public by the United Salem for Bird Life at KannankurichiMookaneri Lake.

S.V. Ganeshwar, founder of the group, said that last year only six eBirders participated and recorded 120 species in Salem.

“This year we hope to record more. Public participation is very essential in such events. The results will help us to conserve birds in the long run”, he said. For details visit www.birdcount.in or 95979-24731.
