Ganesh fest water pollution data yet to be uploaded
Correspondent : Sumita Sarkar
NASHIK: More than a month has passed since the 10-day Ganesh festival but the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board's website has not yet uploaded the water testing reports during the immersion days. Officials said the agency which has been doing the work had some internet problems. Last year also, the findings were uploaded during Diwali time.

Every year, the MPCB collects water samples before, during and after the Ganesh festival. The samples are tested for levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) - the major determinants of water. For the last couple of years, the task has been outsourced to a private agency.

According to the MPCB, there has been no deterioration in the water quality for the past five years, except some insignificant fluctuations.

"The findings are uploaded by the agency on the MPCB's website. It does not come to us," said an MPCB official. Due to shortage of staff the MPCB has outsourced the task to KTHM College that collects the samples, tests them at its laboratory and uploads the findings on the MPCB website.

When asked about the incomplete information on the website he said, "The agency said they had some problem with their internet and that they would upload the results soon."

According to MPCB officials, DO should be above 4mg and BOD between 4mg and 6mg. But, since the results are yet to be uploaded, the MPCB has no clue about the water quality this year.

Samples were collected from Someshwar, Nasardi, Tapovan, Chopada Lawns, Waldevi and other natural immersion spots.
