College students protests against ban on Jallikattu in TN
Correspondent :
Students of several government and private colleges today took out rallies and staged protests in various districts, demanding that the Centre take urgent initiatives to vacate the Supreme Court ban on Jallikattu (bull taming). They threatened to defy the ban and conduct the traditional bravery sport of Tamils during the Pongal festival.

About 2,000 students, including girls of Madura College in Madurai city boycotted their classes and took out a rally from the college at Jaihindapuram, holding placards seeking a nod for continuing Jallikattu. The rally passed through important thoroughfares in the city and culminated at Subramaniyapuram, where the students staged a demonstration.

Students of Government Law College in Madurai boycotted their classes and took out a procession from the college to the District Court. The students staged a road-roko agitation and shouted slogans against the Centre and People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). They also demanded that the government ban PETA in India for opposing Jallikattu.

According to reports reaching here, more than 1,000 students of Alagappa Government Arts College at Karaikkudi in Sivaganga district boycotted classes and staged protest demanding the Central and state governments to promulgate an ordinance to remove the legal impediments, enabling the conduct of Jallikattu.

Students of a private college in Nagapattinam also boycotted classes and staged protest for Jallikattu. Similar protests were held in Tirunelveli and Tiruchirapalli districts.
