Jallikattu enthusiasts take to streets to hold bull-taming sports in Tamil Nadu

Hundreds of "Jallikattu" (taming of bulls) enthusiasts, especially youths hit the streets demanding the Central and State governments to take urgent initiatives to hold bull-taming sports in the state. The rally was organised by the students of various colleges, bull tamers and Jallikattu enthusiasts through "Save Jallikattu" campaigns on social media networks like Facebook and instant message apps like WhatsApp. Leaders of some Caste-based outfits also joined in the rally.Theprocessionists raised slogans against People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and urged the Centre to ban it for opposing Jallikattu. The rally, which commenced from Goripalayam locality, passed through important thoroughfares in the city before reaching the District Collector Office.A large number of police personnel were deployed at the entrance of Collector office. The police closed the entrance gates and prevented the procession to enter into it. Irate over this, a section of youths squatted on the road demanding that the Collector should come and meet them. Later, a senior revenue officer held talks with the youths and accepted their petition that demands the State government to take whatever efforts to ensure Jallikattu events are held during this Pongal festival.
