Noise pollution rampant in Nilgiris, cops warn of action
Correspondent : TNN
UDHAGAMANDALAM: In the wake of the "loud" Ganesha immersion processions, the Nilgiris SP has warned that if people or institutions are found creating noise in public spaces using cone speakers and exceeding the prescribed 10-decibel limit, stringent action would be taken.

MuraliRamba, the Nilgiris SP, said that action would be taken against anyone who is found using loudspeakers after 10 in the night. Many complaints with regard to noise pollution have poured in the past one week in the hill district.

Col.VinodBhaskar said a handful of religious institutions in Aruvankadu were seen using loud speakers continuously for a long period of time. He further said, "The timings were not followed and it was way beyond permitted levels." According to him, the local police turned a blind eye to the issue in that area despite complaints.

Susan Daniel, a well-known writer residing in Ooty said, "Celebrating any religious function cannot be a nuisance to the public." She said, "During Ganesh Chaturthiloud speakers were blaring from different places. The scenario remains the same in case of religious festivals of other faiths."

"The police personnel should be given a refresher course in handling the public in such situations," she said.

Susan was also of the opinion that a training programme should also be held to train the people who handle the mikes.

The local residents said the police should take precautionary measures to ensure no noise pollution was caused.

Referring to the government order pertaining to loudspeakers and the public addressing system, MuraliRamba told TOI, "A thorough check will be conducted across the district in connection with the usage of loudspeaker. Strict actions will be taken against those who violate the law."
