Guwahati: A rhino, which escaped the floods at Kaziranga National Park and took shelter on a high land outside the protected area, succumbed to bullet injuries on Saturday.
The rhino was accidentally hit by bullets fired by forest guards in self-defense on Friday. Two guards were deployed to drive the rhino back to the park as several poaching incidents had took place at the place where the animal had taken shelter. One guard managed to escape, while the other fired in the air when the rhino charged at them.
The rhino died on the way to Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) where the animal was to be given veterinary care.
"After a lot of effort, we could tranquilize the rhino on Saturday. We were taking the rhino to CWRC for treatment. But it died on the way," said CWRC head veterinarian Bhaskar Choudhury.
Kaziranga director Satyendra Singh said the rhino could not be tranquilized on Friday as the animal was close to a waterhole. "But we had given steroid doses so that the animal takes to its limbs and walks away from the waterhole," said Singh.
